Is This a True Happily Ever After?
Today I will be reviewing, Cinder, the first book in the Lunar Chronicles series, by Marissa Meyer. All four books in this series are based on fairy tale characters; Cinderella (Cinder), Red Riding Hood (Scarlet), Rapunzel (Cress), and Snow White (Winter). The genres that I tend to read books in are historical fiction, fantasy, realistic fiction, adventure, mystery and the occasional comedy. I will read dystopian, but it is definitely not my favorite. I feel like dystopian novels all follow the same plot-line and are too similar. However, when I read Cinder and the second book in the series, Scarlet, I thought the exact opposite. Cinder is a one-of-a kind novel that I fell in love with. It was not like any book I have ever read before. The characters were so unique and Marissa Meyer builds this amazing futuristic world that you fall into when reading this book. Once I started, I could not stop. As you can probably tell already this is a 5 star read. This series is geared more toward teens and not so much tweens. I would say if you are 13 or older you could read this book. I suggest this novel to any teens who enjoy dystopian books with a touch of mystery, rebellion, romance, and action. Even if you are not a fan of dystopian novels, I still push you to read this series because it is so good!!!! Also, I also suggest you check out Marissa Meyers other books. She is such a talented author. She has received so many great reviews from other authors and has won several awards for her writing. If you want to read more of her, some of her books include, Heartless and the Renegades series. I hope you all get to read this fantastic series and enjoy it as much as I did!
(I don’t want to spoil the whole series for you, so I am only going to write a summary of the first book, Cinder.)
Cinder is about a 16 year-old mechanic who works in one of the busiest parts of New Beijing, a major city in Eastern Commonwealth. Much like the original story, Cinder was adopted at a young age and lives with her step mother, Adri, and her stepsisters, Pearl and Peony. Unlike the original Cinderella, Cinder is not only a mechanic, but also a cyborg. Her left hand and her right leg and foot are both made of metal; the result of a hover accident when she was little. One day, Cinder and Iko, her comical android assistant, have an unexpected visitor at the mechanic shop. Prince Kaito (or Kai, as he is more commonly known) brings his royale android to Cinder for repair. Kai is unaware of Cinder’s cyborg-ness and she’s happy to keep it that way. The Earth has fallen victim to a deadly plague called Letumosis and it is up to the lead scientists to find an antidote. Things start to get interesting when the ruler of Luna (or the Moon Empire), Queen Levana comes down to Earth. She says she comes in peace, but can Levan be trusted? Will Kai discover the truth about Cinder? Will Cinder discover the truth about herself? Find out in Marissa Meyer’s futuristic Cinderella tale, Cinder!
Happy reading,
